What to wear in Bangladesh and cultural etiquette

Architectural beauty of Star Mosque in Dhaka

Bangladesh is a conservative, mostly Muslim country with large Hindu, Buddhist and Christian communities. You do not need to dress like a local, but covering your shoulders and knees, and wearing loose clothes, will make you more comfortable and earn you a warmer welcome. Here is what to pack and how to behave.

What women should wear

  • Loose trousers or long skirts, and tops that cover the shoulders and upper arms
  • A light scarf, which is useful for mosques, the sun and dusty roads
  • Many visitors buy a salwar kameez (tunic, trousers and scarf) in Dhaka. It is cool, inexpensive and much appreciated.
  • Swimwear only at hotel pools. At Cox’s Bazar, local women swim fully dressed, so a T-shirt and shorts over your swimsuit is wise.

What men should wear

  • Long trousers are best in towns and at religious sites. Shorts are fine for hiking or on boats, but they mark you out in cities.
  • T-shirts and shirts are fine. Avoid sleeveless vests in public.

Visiting mosques, temples and shrines

  • Take your shoes off before entering. Socks are fine, and sandals are easier than laces.
  • Women should cover their hair in mosques and at shrines. Some mosques do not admit women into the main prayer hall.
  • Avoid visiting mosques during Friday midday prayers.
  • Ask before photographing people at prayer.

Everyday etiquette

  • Greetings. “Assalamu alaikum” is the usual greeting among Muslims, and “Nomoskar” among Hindus. A smile and a nod work everywhere.
  • Right hand. Eat, pass money and give gifts with your right hand.
  • Public affection. Holding hands or kissing in public is frowned upon, even for married couples.
  • Curiosity. People will ask where you are from, if you are married and what you do. It is friendly interest, so answer as much as you like.
  • Selfies. You will be asked for many photos. It is fine to say no politely.
  • Homes. If invited in, take off your shoes and accept at least a cup of tea.
  • Ramadan. Avoid eating, drinking and smoking in public during the day.

Practical packing list

  • Light, breathable cotton or linen clothes in muted colours
  • A warm layer for winter evenings and air-conditioned trains
  • Comfortable sandals that slip off easily, plus closed shoes for walking
  • A rain jacket or umbrella from May to October
  • Insect repellent and sun cream
