Chandanpura Mosque
About Chandanpura Mosque
The Chandanpura Mosque, also known locally as the Taja Masjid, stands in the old Chawkbazar area of Chittagong. A mosque has stood here since the 19th century, but the building you see today was rebuilt and enlarged in the mid-20th century, when it gained its ornate, multicoloured facade.
What catches the eye is the decoration: domes of different sizes, slender minarets and walls patterned in bright colours, with arches and floral details picked out in paint and coloured glass. It looks especially good in the morning and late afternoon light, and the busy lanes around it give a real taste of daily life in old Chittagong.
It is a working mosque, so visits should respect prayer times. Your guide will know when to come and which areas are open to visitors. Evergreen Bangladesh Tours visits it on private city tours, often together with the Buddhist Temple and the Central Railway Building.
