Nilachal Hill

Nilachal is a hilltop viewpoint just above Bandarban town, with wide views over rolling hills and the town below. Come for sunset or early morning mist and allow about an hour.

About Nilachal Hill

A short drive up a winding road from Bandarban town brings you to Nilachal, one of the easiest viewpoints in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. From the top, ridge after ridge of green hills fades towards the horizon, with the town and the bends of the Sangu valley below.

Sunset is the classic time to come, when the hills turn blue and gold and the town lights come on. In the rainy season and on some winter mornings, clouds settle in the valleys and the hills seem to float, which is how the place earns its name, roughly the blue hill. There are terraces, simple seating and a few snack stalls at the top, plus cottages run by the local administration if you want to stay for the view.

Nilachal pairs well with Meghla Tourism Complex on an arrival afternoon. For a higher and more dramatic viewpoint, plan a full day for the drive to Nilgiri Hill. On our private Bandarban tours we usually save Nilachal for the end of a day. Bandarban town itself is a centre of Theravada Buddhism, and the golden Buddha Dhatu Jadi temple on a hill just outside town makes a good stop on the same afternoon.

Things to do

  • Sunset viewpoint

Watch the sun set over layer after layer of hills, then see the lights of Bandarban town come on below.

  • Morning mist

On cool mornings and after rain, clouds fill the valleys below the viewpoint. Go early for the best chance.

  • Tea with a view

Sit at one of the stalls or terraces with a cup of tea and watch the light change over the hills.

  • Overnight cottage

Stay at the hilltop cottages to see both sunset and sunrise without the drive.

Getting there

From Bandarban town: Nilachal is a few kilometres up a steep, winding road, about 20 minutes by car or jeep.

From Chattogram: Bandarban is about two and a half to three hours by road, so you can arrive in time for sunset at Nilachal.

Where to stay

Most travellers stay in Bandarban town or at a hillside resort nearby. The cottages at Nilachal itself are simple and popular, so book early for winter weekends.
