About Tetulia Tea Gardens and Kanchenjunga View

In Tetulia, in Panchagarh district at the northern tip of Bangladesh, the country narrows between two arms of India’s West Bengal. The Mahananda River forms the border here, and flat tea gardens run towards its banks, with Indian tea estates on the far side.

The draw is the view north. On clear days, mostly from about October to early December, the snow peaks of Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world, appear above the horizon, well over 100 kilometres away. The old Dak Bungalow on the riverbank is the classic viewpoint, and the first hours after sunrise give the best chance before the haze builds.

Tea has been grown in Panchagarh only since the late 1990s, and unlike the hill gardens of Sylhet these estates lie on the flat plain, so you can walk between the rows with the mountains as a backdrop on a clear morning. A short drive north, Banglabandha is the border crossing with India and the northernmost point of Bangladesh.

Evergreen Bangladesh Tours includes Tetulia on longer private North Bengal tours, usually after Dinajpur and Kantajew Temple. See Rangpur Division for more of the region.

Accommodation in Tetulia is simple: small hotels in the bazaar and government bungalows, including the riverside Dak Bungalow. Panchagarh town, about an hour south, has a little more choice.
