Nouka Baich is one of the great sights of rural Bangladesh. When the rivers are high after the monsoon, villages and towns race long, slender boats, each with dozens of oarsmen pulling in time to a drum and a lead singer, while thousands crowd the banks and follow in boats of their own.
Updated 21 October 2026. The 2026 season is ending; the 2027 races are expected from August.
There is no national calendar. District administrations, city corporations and local committees set the dates each year, often only a week or three ahead. Three of the most reliable races:
| Race | Where | Recent date |
|---|---|---|
| Buriganga boat race | Kholamora Ghat to Wise Ghat, Old Dhaka | 21 August 2026, for Dhaka’s founding anniversary |
| S M Sultan boat race | Chitra river, Narail town | Held around the painter’s birth anniversary; 28 October 2023 |
| Haor boat race | Surma near Dhanpur Bazar, Itna, Kishoreganj | 6 September 2026 |
The Buriganga race starts just upstream of Sadarghat, so it is the easiest one to see from Dhaka.
