Goaldi mosque at sonargaon narayanganj dhaka

Goaldi Mosque

A small, single-domed mosque from 1519, one of the finest surviving buildings of the Bengal Sultanate. It takes about 30 minutes and sits close to Panam City.

About Goaldi Mosque

Goaldi Mosque stands in a quiet village setting just outside Panam City. An inscription dates it to 1519, in the reign of Sultan Alauddin Husain Shah, when Sonargaon was a major centre of Bengal. It is a compact square prayer hall under a single dome, with curved cornices typical of the Sultanate style.

The real reward is the decoration. The brick walls carry delicate terracotta patterns of flowers and vines, and the mihrabs inside show fine carved stone and brickwork. It is one of the few buildings that survive from Sonargaon’s medieval period, when the town was far more important than Dhaka.

The mosque is a protected monument and remains a place of prayer. A visit takes little time, so it fits neatly between Panam City, the Sonargaon Museum and Boro Sardar Bari. Evergreen Bangladesh Tours includes it on private Sonargaon day trips from Dhaka, with a guide to explain its history and details.
