Khasia Tribal Village
About Khasia Tribal Village
The Khasi community in Bangladesh lives in small hamlets, often called punji, set among the forests and hills of greater Sylhet. Their villages are known for neat houses, small churches and, above all, betel leaf (paan) gardens, where vines climb tall trees on the slopes and are harvested by hand. Khasi society traditionally traces family through the mother’s line.
The best-known villages for visitors are near Jaflong, on the edge of the Meghalaya hills, and at Magurchhara inside Lawachara National Forest near Sreemangal. A walk through a village shows you the betel leaf work, the gardens and the quiet rhythm of daily life, very different from the busy plains below.
These are people’s homes, not a show. We visit in small groups with a guide who knows the community, keep to the paths, and always ask before taking photos of people or entering a house. On our private Sylhet and Sreemangal tours, a village walk fits naturally into a Jaflong or Lawachara day.
