Hazrat shahjalals shrine majar at sylhet

Shah Jalal Shrine

The shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal in Sylhet city is the resting place of the Sufi saint who brought Islam to the region in the 14th century, and one of the most visited shrines in Bangladesh. Allow about an hour.

About Shah Jalal Shrine

Shah Jalal is the spiritual heart of Sylhet. The Sufi saint arrived in the region in the 14th century, and his tomb on a low hill in the city has drawn pilgrims ever since, from Bangladesh and from the large Sylheti community abroad. Many people still say the city itself is blessed by his presence.

The complex, known locally as the dargah, is busy and full of life. Pilgrims climb the steps to the tomb to pray, a mosque stands alongside, and the courtyards are filled with the soft sound of recitation. Look out for the flocks of pigeons, known as Jalali pigeons and never harmed here, and the large catfish in the shrine’s pond, which are also treated as sacred. Thursday evenings and religious festivals are especially crowded and atmospheric.

Visitors of any faith are welcome in the grounds if they dress modestly and behave respectfully. Women may be asked not to enter the inner tomb area; your guide will show you where to go. A visit combines easily with a day trip to Jaflong or Ratargul Swamp Forest, and on our private Sylhet tours your guide explains the customs as you walk.

Things to do

  • The tomb

Climb the steps to the saint’s tomb, where pilgrims pray and leave offerings. Shoes come off before you go up.

  • Jalali pigeons

Huge flocks of pigeons live around the shrine and are protected by tradition. Ask before photographing people at prayer.

  • Sacred pond

The shrine’s pond is home to large catfish that pilgrims feed and treat as sacred.

  • Thursday evening

Thursday nights bring crowds of pilgrims and recitation, a moving time to visit if you do not mind the crowds.
