Day 1 – From Dhaka to Chittagong: Ancient Heritage and Industrial Wonders

Your journey begins in Dhaka as we set out for Chittagong, the country’s principal seaport and second-largest city. Set beside the Bay of Bengal, Chittagong is a fascinating destination where commerce, culture, history, and everyday life come together in a unique and dynamic setting.

On the way, we stop at the remarkable Shalban Buddhist Monastery in Mainamati, Comilla, one of the most significant archaeological sites in Bangladesh. Dating from the 7th to 8th century, this ancient monastery features a grand central shrine surrounded by 115 monastic cells arranged around a spacious courtyard. The peaceful ruins offer a captivating glimpse into the region’s Buddhist past and reveal the beauty of early religious architecture in Bengal.

As the journey continues toward Chittagong, the atmosphere shifts from ancient heritage to one of the country’s most unusual industrial landscapes — the Chittagong Ship Breaking Yard. Known as one of the largest ship-recycling centers in the world, this extraordinary site presents a striking view of massive ocean-going vessels being dismantled and transformed through labor, skill, and industry. It is both visually dramatic and economically important, playing a major role in Bangladesh’s steel supply and industrial activity.

In the evening, we visit the distinctive Ship Breaking Product Market, where salvaged materials from decommissioned ships are given a second life. Here, you will find everything from lights, fixtures, and mechanical parts to decorative pieces and household items, creating a market experience unlike any other in the country.

After a day filled with history, industry, and discovery, we settle in for the night in Chittagong City.

Day 2 – The Living Spirit of Chittagong

The second day begins early with a visit to Fishery Ghat, the largest wholesale fish market in Bangladesh, located along the banks of the Karnaphuli River. This vibrant riverside market is one of the best places to witness the pulse of Chittagong’s daily life. As fishing trawlers arrive with fresh catches of hilsa, shrimp, tuna, and many other varieties, the market comes alive with movement, color, and energy. With a trading tradition that reaches back nearly two centuries, it remains one of the city’s most authentic and fascinating experiences.

We then continue to the Wholesale Vegetable Market, where local traders and buyers gather in the early morning to exchange fresh produce from across the region. Bustling, colorful, and full of local character, this market offers another engaging glimpse into the everyday rhythm of the city.

From the energy of the markets, we move to the serene and reflective setting of the Chattogram War Cemetery. Established after the Second World War, this beautifully maintained memorial honors 731 soldiers from different nations who lost their lives during the war. Surrounded by well-kept gardens and elegant brick structures, it is a place of quiet dignity, remembrance, and historical significance.

The journey then takes us to the revered Bayezid Bostami Shrine, one of Chittagong’s most important spiritual landmarks. Dedicated to the famous Persian Sufi saint Bayezid Bostami, this peaceful shrine draws pilgrims and visitors seeking blessings, reflection, and a deeper connection with the spiritual heritage of the region.

Our final stop is the historic Central Railway Building (CRB), built in 1897 and regarded as one of the city’s most iconic colonial-era structures. Set in a scenic area and admired for its architectural charm, the CRB remains an enduring symbol of Chittagong’s historical identity and old-world elegance.

By the end of the day, this journey through markets, memorials, spiritual landmarks, and colonial heritage offers a rich and memorable portrait of Chittagong — a city of contrasts, character, and timeless appeal.
