Kawran Bazar

One of Dhaka’s biggest wholesale markets, where fruit, vegetables and fish arrive through the night. Go very early and allow about an hour.

About Kawran Bazar

Kawran Bazar (also spelled Karwan Bazar) is one of the largest fresh produce markets in Dhaka. Trucks and boats bring vegetables, fruit, fish and spices from across the country overnight, and traders sell them on to shops and street sellers before the city fully wakes up.

The busiest and most photogenic time is from late night to early morning. Porters carry baskets of cauliflowers or bananas on their heads, sellers shout prices, and piles of chillies, gourds and fish fill every corner. By midday it is much quieter.

It is not a tourist market and that is the point. You see how a city of many millions is fed, and most vendors are happy to chat, show their produce and be photographed if you ask first.

The area around the market is also a business district with media offices and hotels. On private tours we visit with a local guide who knows the lanes, and for a contrasting market experience you can add the Gulistan Hawker Market.

Things to do

  • Watch the early trading

See wholesale deals struck over mountains of vegetables and fruit in the hours before dawn.

  • Explore the fish section

River and sea fish arrive in baskets and on ice, from small fry to large hilsa and carp.

  • Street photography

Porters, colourful produce and lantern light make striking pictures. Always ask before photographing people.

  • Taste seasonal fruit

Try whatever is in season, from guavas and oranges in winter to mangoes and jackfruit in summer.

Getting there

By metro: MRT Line 6 has a Karwan Bazar station right by the market, though trains do not run in the very early hours when trading peaks.

By car: about 20 to 40 minutes from Gulshan or Banani, and quickest before dawn when roads are empty.

Where to stay

Several large hotels stand within walking distance of the market, which makes an early start easy. Gulshan and Banani are the other usual choices.
