Lalon Shah's shrine in Cheuriya, Kushtia, lit up at night during the Lalon Mela

Lalon Mela in Kushtia

Twice a year, thousands of Bauls gather at the shrine of the mystic poet Lalon Shah in Kushtia to sing through the night. Dates for 2027, the rituals, and how to visit.

The Lalon Mela is the great gathering of Bangladesh’s Baul singers. Twice a year, thousands of Bauls, fakirs and followers of the mystic poet Fakir Lalon Shah come to his shrine in Cheuriya, Kushtia, and sing his songs through the night. For a traveller it is one of the most moving things you can see in the country: no stage, no tickets, just music, devotion and open hospitality.

This guide covers the dates for 2027, what happens over the three days, how to get there from Dhaka and how to visit respectfully. It was last updated on 21 October 2026, just after our team came back from the October festival.

Lalon Mela dates for 2027

FestivalWhen it happens2027 dates
Lalon Smaran Utsab (spring)Dol Purnima, the full moon of FalgunExpected from 22 March 2027
Lalon death anniversary festival (autumn)1 Kartik, the anniversary of Lalon’s death on 17 October 1890Expected 17 to 19 October 2027 (137th anniversary)

Both festivals follow the Bengali calendar, so Lalon Academy and the Kushtia district administration confirm the exact programme only a few weeks ahead. We update this page as soon as they do. The spring festival usually runs for three days but can be shortened: in March 2026 it was held for one day only because it fell during Ramadan.

How the October 2026 festival went

The 136th death anniversary was marked from 17 to 19 October 2026 on the Lalon Academy grounds in Cheuriya. It opened on the afternoon of the 17th with speeches and a discussion of Lalon’s message of humanism, followed by Lalon songs every evening and a rural fair around the shrine. The main Sadhusanga closed with Purna Seva at noon on Sunday, 18 October, and many devotees stayed on until Monday. You can see our own photos from the festival in the gallery above.

What happens at the Lalon Mela

The festival has two sides that run at the same time: the formal programme and the Sadhusanga, the gathering of Bauls and fakirs.

  • Sadhusanga. Bauls and their gurus meet at the akhra, the shrine courtyard, and follow a sequence of rituals: Adhibas at midnight, then Rakhal Seva, Balya Seva in the morning and Purna Seva at noon, which formally closes the gathering.
  • Music through the night. Small circles of singers form across the grounds with the ektara, dotara, khamak and dhol. The best singing is usually late at night and in the small hours, away from the loudspeakers.
  • The formal programme. Lalon Academy holds opening speeches, discussions on Lalon’s philosophy and evening performances of Lalon songs in its auditorium and on the main stage.
  • The mela. A village fair fills the lanes around the shrine, with stalls selling ektaras, books of Lalon’s songs, cotton clothes, sweets and snacks.

Who was Lalon Shah?

Lalon Shah, also called Lalon Fakir or Lalon Sain, was a 19th-century mystic, philosopher and songwriter who lived in Cheuriya and died there on 17 October 1890. His songs ask why people divide themselves by caste and religion, and they put the human being at the centre of faith: “Worship humanity and you will become a golden man” is how his followers sum it up. He is the best-known figure of the Baul tradition, and UNESCO lists the Baul songs of Bangladesh as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The shrine and Lalon Academy

The festival takes place at Lalon Akhra, the shrine complex in Cheuriya village, Kumarkhali upazila, on the edge of Kushtia town. Devotees began gathering at Lalon’s grave soon after his death; the present white mausoleum was built in 1963. The Lalon Academy building beside it, with its auditorium, was added in 2004, and the complex also has a small museum about Lalon. Outside festival time it is a calm place where Bauls often sing in the evening.

How to get there from Dhaka

  • By road. Kushtia is about 150 km west of Dhaka. Long-distance buses such as Hanif Enterprise take around five and a half hours. Allow more time in festival week, when roads into Kushtia are busy.
  • By train. Intercity trains to the south-west, such as the Benapole Express, stop at Poradah Junction, where you continue to Kushtia by road. Tickets sell out quickly before festivals, so book as early as Bangladesh Railway allows.
  • In Kushtia. Cheuriya is a short auto-rickshaw or easy-bike ride from the town centre. In festival week the lanes around the shrine are packed, so expect to walk the last part.

Where to stay

Kushtia has only a handful of hotels, and the better rooms are booked out well before the festival. Book early, or let us arrange it. Staying in town is much better than a day trip from Dhaka: the music only really starts after dark and carries on until morning.

Tips for visiting

  • Go at night as well as by day. The daytime fair is lively, but the singing circles at night are the heart of the festival.
  • Dress modestly in light cotton, and take your shoes off where others do near the shrine.
  • Ask before taking close-up photos. Most Bauls are happy to be photographed and to talk; a small gift for the musicians is welcome.
  • Expect big crowds. Keep your phone and money in a front pocket, carry small notes for stalls, and agree a meeting point with your group.
  • Some sadhus smoke ganja as part of their practice. It is not part of the festival for visitors, and it is illegal in Bangladesh.
  • Bring a scarf or light layer: October nights are pleasant, and March can still be cool after midnight.

Combine it with

Rabindranath Tagore’s Kuthibari at Shilaidaha, his family’s estate house on the Padma, is a short drive from Kushtia and makes an easy half day. Our Bangladesh Cultural and Heritage Discovery Tour and Ten Days Across Bangladesh both include Lalon Akhra. See our guide to festivals in Bangladesh for other dates worth planning around.

Visiting with us

We take guests to the Lalon Mela. A guide who knows the Bauls stays with you through the evening, finds the quieter singing circles, translates the songs and gets you back to your hotel whenever you are ready. We can plan the festival as a short trip from Dhaka or as part of a longer tour. Plan your trip and tell us which festival you would like to see.
