Nine Dome Mosque
About Nine Dome Mosque
The Nine Dome Mosque (Noy Gombuj Masjid) stands on the west bank of Thakur Dighi in Bagerhat, in Khulna Division, although it is filed under Barishal on this site. It dates from the 15th century and is one of the monuments of the UNESCO-listed Historic Mosque City of Bagerhat.
As the name suggests, its roof carries nine domes, arranged in three rows of three over a square prayer hall, supported on internal stone pillars. The walls are thick brick, with rounded towers at the corners and terracotta decoration around the prayer niches, though much has weathered over the centuries. The setting by the old pond is quiet and green.
It is a short walk across the pond from the Khan Jahan Ali Shrine, and a few minutes’ drive from the Sixty Dome Mosque and Singair Mosque. Evergreen Bangladesh Tours includes it on private Bagerhat tours with a local guide.
